Commands (Java 1.20.5+)
Paste into chat with cheats on, or into a command block.
/give @p white_banner[banner_patterns=[{pattern:"minecraft:stripe_bottom",color:"purple"},{pattern:"minecraft:circle",color:"yellow"}]]/give @p shield[base_color="white",banner_patterns=[{pattern:"minecraft:stripe_bottom",color:"purple"},{pattern:"minecraft:circle",color:"yellow"}]]How banner layers work
Every pattern is painted on top of everything before it, so order matters as much as colour. A Bordure added first gets covered by a later Per Fess; added last, it frames the whole design. That’s why the list above is also your loom order: work down it one step at a time, feeding the banner back into the loom each time.
Two tricks designers lean on: paint a large half in the base colour to “erase” part of an earlier layer, and use Gradient in the same colour as the base for a soft vignette. See every shape side by side on the banner patterns list, and check where each dye comes from on the dye colors page.
Questions players ask
How many patterns can a Minecraft banner have?
In Java Edition a loom lets you add up to 6 patterns; commands allow up to 16 (more layers are ignored by the renderer in older versions). Bedrock Edition also caps survival banners at 6 patterns. This maker lets you stack up to 16 and warns you past 6.
How do I put a banner on a shield?
Place a shield and a patterned banner together in a crafting grid. The shield takes the design and the banner is used up. A shield that already has a pattern cannot be re-patterned, and banners with more than 6 layers cannot be applied in survival.
Which patterns need a banner pattern item?
Creeper Charge, Skull Charge, Flower Charge, Thing, Globe, Snout, Flow, Guster, Field Masoned and Bordure Indented each need their banner pattern item in the loom’s third slot. Everything else only needs the banner and a dye.
Does the /give command work on Bedrock?
No. The command uses Java Edition item components (1.20.5 and newer). On Bedrock, follow the loom steps instead.
Is my banner saved?
Yes, the current design is kept in your browser’s localStorage so it survives a reload. Nothing is sent anywhere. Press Reset to clear it.
