Minecraft Gradient Generator
Blend two to six colours across your text and copy it in whatever format your server reads: plugin hex codes, MiniMessage, vanilla JSON, or a MOTD-safe fallback.

How hex colours work in Minecraft
Before 1.16, Java Edition text had only the 16 colour codes listed on the Minecraft color codes page. Version 1.16 (the Nether Update) added full RGB colour to the JSON text format, so every letter can carry its own hex value. A gradient is just that: the generator works out evenly spaced colours between your stops and writes one code per letter.
Because each letter needs its own colour code, gradient text gets long. A 20-letter name in &x format is several hundred characters, which is fine in a config file but too long for a chat message. MiniMessage avoids that by letting the plugin compute the gradient itself.
Where to paste each format
- &#RRGGBB: EssentialsX nicknames and chat, CMI, holograms, scoreboards.
- &x&R&R…: plugins written against the old Bukkit colour API.
- MiniMessage: Paper and Velocity configs, MiniMOTD, TAB, LuckPerms prefixes in many setups.
- JSON:
/tellraw @afollowed by the output, or inside/titleand data packs. - MOTD: vanilla server.properties. Build the full two-line MOTD with a preview in the MOTD generator.
Questions players ask
How do I make gradient text in Minecraft?
Vanilla Java 1.16+ can colour each character with a hex value through JSON text (/tellraw, /title, signs via commands). Plugins usually accept &#RRGGBB or MiniMessage’s <gradient> tag. Type your text above, pick colours and copy the format your server uses.
Which format does my server need?
EssentialsX and most chat plugins read &#RRGGBB. Older Spigot plugins often need &x&R&R&G&G&B&B. Paper, Velocity and plugins built on Adventure use MiniMessage. Vanilla commands use JSON. If a format shows raw codes in game, try the next one.
Can I use a gradient in my server MOTD?
Not in vanilla server.properties, which only understands the 16 legacy colours; the MOTD output here snaps each letter to the closest of those. For a true hex gradient MOTD, use a plugin such as MiniMOTD with the MiniMessage output.
Do gradients work on Bedrock?
No. Bedrock text only supports its fixed § colour codes, with no hex colours.
Why does my gradient look banded?
Short text has few letters to spread the colours across. Use longer text, colours that are closer together, or fewer stops.
