What makes a MOTD that gets clicks

The server list is a wall of near-identical entries, and players decide in about a second. The MOTDs that work tend to follow the same pattern:

  • Line 1 is identity: the name and the game modes, in one or two brand colours.
  • Line 2 is news: a new season, an event, a version number, a discount on ranks. Change it often; returning players notice.
  • Two or three colours, not ten. Grey (&7) and dark grey (&8) separators make the bright colours pop.
  • Bold sparingly. Bold adds a pixel per character, so a fully bold line fits noticeably less text.
  • Skip &k obfuscation except for one or two characters of flair; a whole scrambled line reads as broken.

All codes and their hex values are on the Minecraft color codes page. Finish the listing with a custom picture from the server icon maker, or make hex gradient text for plugins with the gradient generator.

Questions players ask

Where do I put the MOTD?

Open server.properties in your server folder, find the line that starts with motd= and paste the server.properties line from this page after it. Save and restart the server. Hosts such as Apex, Shockbyte or Aternos usually expose the same setting in their control panel.

Why does my MOTD show strange characters like §?

server.properties is read as ISO-8859-1 on older versions, so a pasted § can become §. Use the escaped \u00A7 form that this generator outputs; it works on every version.

How do I make a two-line MOTD?

Put \n between the lines. The server list shows two lines, so anything after a second line break is cut off.

How long can a MOTD be?

Each line fits about 270 pixels in the Java server list, which is roughly 45 characters of normal text or fewer in bold. Longer lines are cut off. This page measures width with Minecraft’s font metrics and warns you when a line runs over.

Can I use hex colours in the MOTD?

Vanilla server.properties only supports the 16 legacy colours. Hex and gradients need a plugin such as MiniMOTD on Paper or Velocity, which reads MiniMessage.
