Minecraft Brewing Guide

Brewing is a small state machine: every potion is a water bottle pushed through a fixed series of ingredients. Learn the four stages and you never need to memorise a recipe list.

Try the brewing stand

Fuel it, then add ingredients in any order. Wrong orders behave exactly as in the game, including the dead-end Mundane Potion.

Add an ingredient

  1. Three water bottles sit in the stand. Add blaze powder as fuel to start.

How to brew a potion, step by step

  1. Get blaze rods. Find a Nether fortress and fight blazes near their spawner. One rod makes the stand; the rest become blaze powder for fuel.
  2. Craft the brewing stand: blaze rod in the middle of the top row, three cobblestone (or blackstone, or cobbled deepslate) along the bottom.
  3. Fill glass bottles from any water source. A cauldron works too, three bottles per bucket.
  4. Fuel it with blaze powder in the top-left slot. One powder lasts 20 brews.
  5. Base: put up to three water bottles in the bottom slots and Nether Wart on top. After 20 seconds you have Awkward Potions.
  6. Effect: add the effect ingredient, such as Magma Cream for Fire Resistance or Golden Carrot for Night Vision.
  7. Modify (optional): redstone for longer, glowstone for stronger, fermented spider eye to corrupt it into its opposite.
  8. Form (optional): gunpowder to make it a splash potion, then dragon’s breath for lingering.

The four stages

1Base

Water + Nether Wart = Awkward

2Effect

Awkward + ingredient = potion

3Modifier

Redstone, glowstone or fermented eye

4Form

Gunpowder, then dragon’s breath

Seen this way, the whole recipe book is just stage two: which ingredient gives which effect. The full table, with every duration, lives on the Minecraft potions page.

Each ingredient in stage two is ultimately something a living thing grew or made: sugar cane, carrots, melons. If that chain from sunlight to sugar has ever made you wonder, ahaboo’s photosynthesis explainer shows how a plant actually builds sugar out of air and light.

Efficient brewing habits

  • Always brew three bottles at once; the ingredient cost is the same.
  • Brew a batch of Awkward Potions ahead of time and store them. Most trips only need the effect step.
  • A cauldron next to the stand saves walking to water; hoppers can automate fuel and ingredients.
  • Dragon’s breath is only collected with a bottle from the Ender Dragon’s breath attack, so save lingering potions for arrows (tipped arrows need 8 arrows around one lingering potion).

Questions players ask

What do you need to start brewing in Minecraft?

A brewing stand (1 blaze rod + 3 cobblestone, blackstone or cobbled deepslate), blaze powder for fuel, glass bottles filled with water, and Nether Wart. Blaze rods come from blazes in Nether fortresses, and Nether Wart grows in fortresses and bastions.

How long does one brew take?

20 seconds per ingredient. Each piece of blaze powder fuels 20 brewing operations, and each operation can process up to three bottles at once.

Why did I get a Mundane Potion?

You added an effect ingredient (like sugar or a spider eye) straight to a water bottle instead of to an Awkward Potion. Mundane and Thick potions are dead ends. Always add Nether Wart first.

Can I extend and upgrade the same potion?

No. Redstone and glowstone replace each other: a potion is either extended or level II, never both.

How do I farm Nether Wart?

Plant it on soul sand in any dimension. It grows without light or water, and a fully grown plant drops 2–4 wart, so a small farm quickly supplies a brewing setup.
