Minecraft Skin Template

A skin is a 64×64 PNG: head top-left, body and right limbs in the middle, left limbs and second layers below. Download the blank layout, or tap a body part to see its six faces light up on the sheet and in 3D.

Paint it in the editor

TO top · BO bottom · FR front · BA back · RI right · LE left. Faded boxes are the second layer.

How the template folds into a character

Each body part is a box, and its six faces are laid out flat in a cross shape: the top and bottom sit in a row above the four sides, which run right, front, left, back as if you unrolled the box around the character. That’s why the front of the head is at x 8–16, y 8–16, and why the back of every part sits furthest right in its group.

The “right” and “left” are the character’s own. When the skin faces you, the right arm is on your left. Left limbs got their own slots in Java 1.8; older 64×32 skins reused the right-side textures mirrored, which is why the editor converts them when imported.

Questions players ask

What is the Minecraft skin template size?

64×64 pixels. The top half holds the head, hat layer, body, right arm and right leg; the bottom half holds the jacket, sleeves, pants layers and the left arm and left leg, which were added in Java 1.8.

Which side is the right arm on the template?

The “right” arm is the character’s right, which appears on the left of the screen when the character faces you. On the template, the right arm sits at x 40–56, y 16–32, and the left arm at x 32–48, y 48–64.

What is the difference between the Steve and Alex template?

Only the arms change. Steve arms are 4 pixels wide, Alex arms 3 pixels wide, so each arm face shrinks by one column and the unused pixels are ignored.

How do I use a skin template to make my own skin?

Download the template PNG, paint over each coloured area in an image editor (or paint straight onto the 3D model in the PixelForge skin editor), save it as a 64×64 PNG and upload it in the Minecraft Launcher under Skins, or on minecraft.net for Java Edition. On Bedrock, open the Dressing Room, go to Classic Skins and choose Import.

Is there a slim (Alex) skin template?

Yes. Switch the model to Slim (Alex) above and download again: the arms become 3 pixels wide and the layout labels update. Choose the matching arm type when you upload the skin, or the arms will show a stripe of unused pixels.

Can I edit the template in any image editor?

Yes. Download the blank template PNG, open it in any editor that supports transparency (GIMP, Krita, Paint.NET, Photopea), keep it at 64×64 and save as PNG. Or paint it directly in the PixelForge skin editor with a live 3D preview.
