How to make banners in Minecraft
- Banner: 6 matching wool + 1 stick.
- Loom: 2 string on top of 2 planks. Far cheaper than crafting patterns by hand and it only uses one dye per layer.
- Apply: banner in slot 1, dye in slot 2, optional pattern item in slot 3, then choose from the list. Repeat up to six times.
- Shield: put the finished banner and a shield in a crafting grid.
Want to see how layers stack before spending dye? Design it in the banner maker: it writes out the loom steps in order. Colours and dye sources are on the dye colors page.
Questions players ask
How do you make a banner in Minecraft?
Put 6 wool of one colour in the top two rows of a crafting table and a stick in the bottom middle. The wool colour becomes the banner’s base colour.
How do you put patterns on a banner?
Use a loom (2 string over 2 planks). Put the banner in the first slot and a dye in the second, then pick a pattern. For special patterns, put the banner pattern item in the third slot.
How do you get banner pattern items?
Flower Charge, Creeper Charge, Skull Charge, Thing, Field Masoned and Bordure Indented are crafted from paper plus an item (oxeye daisy, creeper head, wither skeleton skull, enchanted golden apple, bricks, vines). Globe is bought from master cartographers; Snout comes from bastion chests; Flow and Guster from trial chamber vaults.
Can you copy a banner?
Yes. Put the patterned banner and a blank banner of the same base colour in a crafting grid to get two copies. The original is not used up.
How do you remove a pattern?
Use a banner on a filled cauldron. Each use removes the most recent pattern and lowers the water level.
